IMPRESSION

WREN 110 ATK - a smooth suspension fork, with high degree of adjustability.  Very stiff, no noticeable flex.  Very agile steering, the quickest steering fork of the bunch.  Bike tracks very well with this fork.

Able to take much bigger drops and hits than a Bluto.  A Bluto would die in the conditions the WRENs can operate in all day all.  The extra weight (Bluto = 3.9 lbs vs Wren = 4.7 lbs) is very unnoticeable once you start riding a demanding trail.  You cannot tell the difference in weight once riding the bike.  The front end does not feel heavy and sluggish.  Customers have agreed, the Wren fork provides a more enjoyable ride.

A good fork for someone that likes to "tweak" their settings, and fine tune equipment for individual race and trail conditions.  This fork can be fine tuned and calibrated in less than 3 minutes, to each trail and track condition you may ride.  With the "Twin-Air" setup, there is infinite adjustment options to damping and rebound.  All that is needed is a shock pump, to recalibrate the top and bottom air chambers.  A higher air ratio in the top chamber makes the ride more "plush" and suited for XC trails.  A higher air ratio in the bottom chamber firms up the ride, for big hits and aggressive terrain.

XC and smoother trail riding, keep a 4:1 or 5:1 ratio of air in the Top vs Bottom chamber.  The more aggressive the riding, the closer to 1:1 ratio you may need to absorb the biggest hits.

The Wren uses twin air chambers and a special extreme cold weather damper, so its less affected by extreme cold temps, than other forks in this comparison.

IMPRESSION

WREN 150 ATK - a very nice all-mountain rated heavy-duty suspension fork, with high degree of adjustability.

This is the fork to use for big hits.

The Bluto cannot even compete on any level with this 150mm travel high-performance suspension fork.  The minor weight addition weight is very unnoticeable once you start riding a demanding trail.  The huge stanchion diameters offer flex-free riding with agile and quick responsive steering.  Bike will track better, rear wheel will have more grip, and Wren fork provides a more controlled ride.

A very good choice for the hard-core fat-biker, with a high-travel FSFB (such as the Foes Mutz/150).

This is not a "Set and Forget" type of fork.  It works best when you re-calibrate it for differing trail conditions, allowing you to dial in your ride.

Recalibration requires only a shock pump for adjustment, and it takes less than 3 minutes prior to your ride, to completely reconfigure and adjust suspension settings to different trail or race environments.  This is accomplished by adjusting 3 things : the overall PSI rating, and the volume ratios in the top, and the bottom air chambers.

IMPRESSION

PRO EXT model is currently undergoing testing and results are very favorable.

Retail boxed versions come with both a red/white and grey/black/red decal set.

This is a HUGE upgrade from a Bluto fork.

Great quality control, fit and finish.

Very smooth ride on XC terrain, both at low and high speed.  Well damped.  Modified lockout switch not as good as Wren (this lowers max sprint speed as fork absorbs some of the power transfer to the wheels).  The Mastodon PRO is the only fork that offers both low-speed and high-speed compression damping, for better control at speed (The COMP version does not have this option and uses more basic internals).

This PRO fork is designed to be a set-and-forget fork that will perform quite well on all terrains.

A bit more flex compared to a Wren, but not much.  Noticeably stiffer than a Bluto.

The Mastodon is the heaviest and widest suspension fork of the bunch.

Steering is a bit slower than a Wren at low speed, but catches up the faster you ride.

Rated for winter, and we shall see how cold it can go, through testing in a few months.  This shock uses oil, so it may be more susceptible to the cold, and require a different viscosity if riding in very low temps.  Regardless, this MASTODON PRO is a very solid upgrade from a Bluto RCT3/RL, and a smart buy.

(This review does not apply to the COMP model.  It does not have the same performance characteristics, and was designed to directly replace the Bluto, where the Bluto cannot handle 27.5 x 4.5in tires.

Mastodon PRO 150 (EXT) fork available only with purchase of a FOES MUTZ 150 FSFB frameset or complete bike.

WHICH IS BETTER ?

It all depends on the trails you ride and how well designed your Fat Bike is.

There are a lot of compatibility issues with different Fat Bikes and modern suspension forks.  Some Fat Bikes (even brand new 2017/18 models) were (and still are) designed around the Bluto and cannot accept the Mastodon or Wren forks, because of hub flange design, or down-tube clearance.

Some Fat Bike manufacturers will also specifically point out, their frames are NOT RATED for ALL-MOUNTAIN USE.  They will void the warranty if you put a high-performance suspension fork on it, or have a longer AC or Travel setting then they suggest using.  (This usually equates to the engineers designing the frame to save weight/manufacturing costs and the head-tube is weak and not strong enough for more aggressive suspension riding).

Readers need to realize that some Fat Bike frame manufacturers and Accessory manufacturers are still designing Fat Bikes to be SNOW-ONLY rated, and not 4-SEASON rated

This affects your upgrade options and riding conditions.  Before you go out and buy your next Fat Bike, ask the manufacturer if BOTH the FRAME and the WHEELSET are :

  • 4-SEASON RATED
  • ALL MOUNTAIN RATED
  • COMPATIBLE AND TESTED WITH WREN AND MASTODON SUSPENSION FORKS

You might be surprised by the results you get back...

We have completed a lot of testing on this topic, with many different brands of fat bikes, and gaining ground on the database that shows which high-performance suspension forks and fat bikes are compatible with each other.

NOTE :  If a Fat Bike is compatible with the MASTODON STD OR EXT suspension fork, it will also be compatible with a WREN ATK, as the MASTODON design is wider than a WREN, with similar AC axle-to-crown lengths.

MASTODON PRO

STD vs EXT

AC - AXLE TO CROWN MEASUREMENTS

STD vs EXT fork can be confusing to some.  STD is mainly for FS (full-suspension) bikes, or bikes not requiring wider than 26x4in tires, or for frames that cannot accept a taller AC (axle-to-crown) length that 511mm.  Some frames are designed for 100mm travel ONLY.  Upgrading to 120mm travel MAY VOID your warranty (aka = Salsa owners)

EXT forks can accomodate wider tires, up to 4.8in or sometimes 5.0in wide...depends on the brand.  See charts below for all tires tested and approved by Manitou to fit into their EXT suspension forks.

Note : Selecting an EXT fork will raise the AC by 20mm, over the same suspension travel fork in STD mode.  (see chart below for details)
