DURABILITY

Our custom built OTSO VOYTEK and 9:ZERO:7 TUNDRA and LYNX Fat Bikes are designed to at least ASTM Condition 3 strength ratings (singletrack Trail, 4-Season adventuring w/ suspension use). The FOES MUTZ v2 builds are designed to ASTM Condition 3 to 5 strength ratings, depending on components installed (frame is ASTM CAT5 rated).

WEIGHT

RideFATbikes.ca custom build weights on the OTSO VOYTEK and 9:ZERO:7 LYNX are as low as 21 lbs, and most of our “GX Stage1” carbon builds reach 24-25 lbs with standard ALLOY wheels!

PERFORMANCE

RideFATbikes.ca provides Fat bikes capable of taking the podium wins. (Actually the fat bike brands we sell HAVE taken the podiums at the Fat Bike World Championships, the White Mountains 200, the Fat Bike Birkie, the Alaska Iditarod 350 and 1000 mile races, all within the same year!)

(Save 3-9 lbs with our custom built Fat bikes!)

  • All of our bikes feature proven high-quality components by Industry leaders.

Retail prices start at $5000+ CAD.

At RideFATbikes.ca, we only charge the Retail ($CAD) price on all of our complete bikes and framesets, using daily currency exchange rates.

There is never any markup over Retail prices, aside from necessary import and logistics costs, which are clearly indicated on our invoices.

All our custom build kits include :

    • The latest SRAM (2022) GX / XO / XX / AXS drivetrains

    • Quality 4-piston brakes and rotors, for the best possible stopping power.

    • Lowest Fat Bike Q-Factors in the Industry.

    • Strongest Fat bike carbon wheelsets in the Industry.

    • Suspension options of 100, 120, 140 or 150mm travel.

    • All frames, wheelsets and components are rated ASTM CAT 3-5 for 4-season adventuring.

    • (ASTM CAT 2 carbon bikes for winter-specific racing can reach 21-22 lbs, built upon request).

  • Quality Control is of upmost importance at RideFATbikes.ca.

Current wait times for replacing warranty items may extend to beyond 1 year with current Industry shortages and delays due to the pandemic.

We have never experienced a frame warranty failure for FOES, 9:ZERO:7, OTSO, MOOTS, BH or KNOLLY bikes.

We discontinue any product where customers experience a warranty claim rate exceeding 10%.

  • Everyone should make ASTM CAT ratings an important consideration when purchasing ANY bicycle component, especially high-stress parts like frames, forks, wheelsets, and handlebars.

Details can be found at www.astm.org, or searching on the ASTM Classifications of Bicycle Usage document titled “ASTM F2043-13”.

If a part does not have a certified and sufficient ASTM CAT strength rating awarded to it, then we strongly suggest you not consider buying it from any source.

    • All of the MTB / FAT bikes we sell are composed entirely of ASTM CAT 3-5 parts, unless specifically noted, such as (ASTM CAT 2) HED wheelset installations to achieve sub 22 lb bike weights for winter-specific riding.

As a general rule, aim to purchase parts that are rated one-step-up in durability from the riding environment the bike will be ridden in.

    *************************************

ASTM CAT 1 = (ROAD only) the least durable and weakest part classification . This is a set of conditions for the operation of a bicycle on a regular paved surface where the tires are intended to maintain ground contact.

ASTM CAT 2 = SAND / GRAVEL / SNOW certification for Adventure and FAT bikes.

    • Drops of 15cm (6” or less).

    • not rated for Jumps

This classification is not designed for aggressive or competitive 4-season / all-weather suspension-rated bike use. If unrated - don’t expect that product to last or stand up to abuse for more than 2 years before needing to be replaced). This category is where you will see 70+% of the OEM mainland Chinese Carbon Industry warranties offering only a 2-year limited (and usually very discretionary) warranty for their FAT BIKE Frame, Rim, and other carbon bicycle products. There can be many conditions in the MFG warranties that will void the frameset at ASTM CAT2 - read the fine print! (this can include warranties voiding the frame after first use of the bike, or assembly and maintenance by owner and not by an authorized dealer)

ASTM CAT 3 = (MTB TRAIL / SINGLETRACK rating).

    • This is the minimum certified rating we accept for all our installed FAT and MTB bicycle products that may see high-stress use, such as Cranksets, Frames, Forks, ANY carbon part, Wheelsets, and Saddles, to name just a few parts.

    • Jumps and drops are intended to be less than 61cm (24”).

    • rated for 4-season use

    • rated for suspension use

ASTM CAT 4 = MTB ALL-MOUNTAIN / AM rating). This is the minimum strength rating of any frames wheelsets destined for suspension-capable bikes looking to ride in AM environments.

    • downhill grades on rough trails at speeds less than 40 km/h (25 mph), or both. Jumps are intended to be less than 122cm (48”).

ASTM CAT 5 = DH rating. The best rating possible, and designed for all riding conditions of the bikes we sell.

    • extreme jumping; or downhill grades on rough trails at speeds in excess of 40 km/h (25 mph); or a combination thereof.

ASTM CAT 5 means the safest option and the least likely chance to ever need a warranty claim on items in this category.

  • At RideFATbikes.ca we take warranty coverage very seriously, because it can impact every customer.

    FRAMES

All framesets we currently stock have Industry-leading warranties, and our customers have not had a single warranty claim to date for : (OTSO, 9:ZERO:7, MOOTS, FOES RACING, KNOLLY, BH)

    WHEELSETS

Both ATOMIK CARBON and DERBY RIMS offer Lifetime warranties w/ Rim Strike protection coverage. They are both ASTM CAT 4/5 Rated for AM or DH use.

This is the BEST POSSIBLE WARRANTY COVERAGE in the Industry.

    TIRES

We test all the tires we stock. Only the highest-performing tires, with the best warranties and customer service records, remain in our inventory.

    DISCONTINUING A PRODUCT

If a brand experiences any of the following conditions, we discontinue that product :

    • A warranty claim or failure rate exceeding 10% (FATBACK BIKES / CORVUS CYCLES Skookum/FLT and Corvus/FLT carbon frames)

    • MFG repeatedly fighting or ignoring valid warranty claims, leaving customers stranded (TERRENE tires, DIRT COMPONENTS rims)

    • Sudden increases in warranty claims on a product, or a drastic decrease in warranty coverage by the MFG. (FATBACK carbon Wheelsets)

    • MFG dropping their warranty coverage to below ASTM CAT 3 standards, and/or failure to provide coverage for riders+gear+bike up to 270 lbs combined weight. (BOREALIS warns of possible catastrophic frame damage after 230 lbs combined weight)

    • MFG drops their warranty coverage if user assembles their own bike. (BOREALIS)

  • All of our current bike brands for are Made in the USA, Taiwan or Spain.

Logistics Fees charged by CBSA Canada Customs, and International Shipping Services such as UPS and FEDEX :

Import Duties range from 0-13% for most cycling components. Complete bikes (pre-assembled by MFG) are subject to a 13% Duty + oversized box fees ($150+). Imported clothing/fabric items may have duties of 17%-19%. Some “Made in USA” items are duty-free.

Shipping costs for 2023 are significant and may cost $300-950 CAD per complete bike, based on its Retail value, shipping, broker, and duty costs at the border.

For a quick estimate on what a complete bike imported from the USA would cost (in $CAD) delivered to Ontario Canada, multiply the $USD Retail price on the USA MFG’s website by x1.6.

Stock Build w/ upgrades vs. A true Custom Bike Build

There are two seemingly very different ways the cycling industry defines a “custom bike build” :

  1. Order a stock bike with a predefined generic build kit. Swap out a few components like tires, grips and saddle. Job complete! Some bike shops apparently call this a “custom bike build”. (We call it a stock build w/upgrades)

    - OR -

  2. Understand what type of riding environment the new owner intends to be in. Perform a bike fitment. Pay attention to all the details. Select an appropriate frameset for the rider’s needs. Order each and every component of the bike build, to meet the design and fitment goals of the rider. Focus on high-performance and quality parts. This is what RideFATbikes.ca calls a true custom bike build. It takes a lot more time, effort, and energy to go this route, but we know it’s worth it!

Our definition of a successful custom bike build :

  • PERFORMANCE - The new bike must perform at the highest levels possible, for the available budget.

  • QUALITY - is of upmost importance, and cannot be stressed enough. The components and framesets going into the custom build must be durable, lightweight, and last through the length of their warranty lifespan. If a warranty claim is required, we only work with reputable brands that are well known for their customer and product support. We drop brands that fight all valid warranty claims, or refuse to honour legitimate frame warranty issues. By default, every RideFATbikes.ca custom build is designed for 4-season use and rated ATSM CAT 3/4/5 (Trail/AM/DH). We do not cut corners and only build to ASTM CAT 2 levels, which is only rated for sand, snow, and non-suspension use. Why? Because parts tend to break at CAT2, and no one wants to deal with avoidable warranty claims or parts replacements, with all the shortages and wait times that the cycling industry has been dealing with recently. Build it right the first time!

  • BIKE FITMENT - If a bike does not fit well, then the owner will seldom ride it. Each and every custom bike that we build, evolves out of our analysis of selecting the most appropriate frame, and then selecting each and every part that creates a “best-fit” scenario for the rider. Sometimes this may involve stock manufactured parts (in particular sizes or component levels), and sometimes it may mean we need to get parts custom built or fabricated for the new owner.

  • LONG-TERM OWNERSHIP - A successful custom bike build is one where the owner keeps their bike long-term, and is very happy with the way the bike performs, and how well it fits the rider.

Benefits of RideFATbikes.ca building your next bike :

  • We test all the bike components that we sell and include our custom builds. This includes (but is not limited to) framesets, suspension, tires, wheelsets, saddles, dropper posts, brakesets, drivetrains, and carbon components (including rims, handlebars, seatposts, cranksets). After testing all the gear we then stock the most durable, highest quality, and best-performing components and framesets available.

  • We are rider owned and operated. Every member of the RideFATbikes.ca team is an avid cyclist, and passionate about the sport of cycling. We ride year-round and will build your bike according to your design goals, whether it might be a versatile 4-season adventure bike or a winter-specific race-spec 21 lb Fat bike.

Our leadership team’s background experience includes :

  • Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering

  • Project Management / Supply Chain Logistics

  • Health Sciences / Physiotherapy

This diverse knowledge offers many benefits during the custom build process including :

  • Understanding the Strength of Materials, and manufacturing processes unique to carbon fiber, titanium and aluminum fabrication. This allows a solid understanding of which components to select in any particular bike build. (We can look past the advertising and understand which products may perform better than others - based on their manufacturing techniques, quality control tolerances, and ASTM CAT strength rating)

  • Streamlining the sourcing of all build components (which may require ordering from up to 14 different manufacturers for every bike build), and organizing the importation and transportation logistics of all sourced parts.

  • Obtaining proper rider fitment and optimizing that design goal through the selection of specific build components.

  5. Payment :

    • Once payment for the custom bike has been received, the build begins.

  6. Bike Fitment :

    • During the custom build process, we perform a bike fitment assessment, and will work with our clients to fine-tune their new bikes to best-fit parameters.

    • We will order all parts with these geometry calculations in mind, and customize the components to maximize the performance and fitment requirements of each order.

    • Note : RideFATbikes.ca has a proprietary internal geometry database, which aids our company in bike fitment for our customers. This database contains the full geometry stats for over 650 frames, and has been collecting data on Fat Bike frame geometries since 2015 from all the leading Fat Bike manufacturers.

  7. Bike Delivery :

    • Once the custom bike has been built, RideFATbikes.ca will schedule a delivery time with our clients.
